The health and life science cluster in Newcastle is growing at pace, with demand far outweighing supply.

Newcastle City Council has been awarded grant funding by the The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP) to develop a business case and investor proposition that will go to market later this year. This business case will look at phase two of health and life science commercial space in Newcastle (Biosphere Phase Two). This follows the success of The Biosphere a Newcastle City Council owned, and award-winning building based on Newcastle Helix and now a regional hub for this cluster.

To secure the future growth and resilience of this cluster the city needs to meet its needs. This cluster is defined as health and life science businesses, key stakeholders, and complementary sectors that such as digital and tech and professional services.

Newcastle City Council is seeking to commission a consultancy (or consortium) to undertake an assessment of how the cluster could grow in the city over the next ten years, identifying their needs and specifically those that could be provided by Biosphere Phase Two. This commission will also make recommendations on the long-term ambition for resilience and growth in the city.

This work will need to be shaped by the needs of businesses, stakeholders, and opportunities to attract more business and investment to the city.

Newcastle will go to market later in the year to secure a long-term investor to enable the development and growth of this cluster.  The report and data provided by this commission will be used as evidence to support this process and make recommendations for the best route to market.  Insights from this work will support the development of a proposition to go to market and to form the basis of negotiations with potential investors.

The North East of England’s £1.7bn regional life science eco-system employs almost 7,000 professionals in almost 200 companies, who operate globally from the region. Newcastle’s innovative life science, healthcare, and biotech sector has seen huge growth in recent years. This is an opportunity to play your part in its future success.

Deadline for submissions is 12pm on 11 April 2022.
